Thanks for visiting the website of the Institute of Plantation Studies (IKP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). IKP brings together a wealth of expertise in UPM researchers under one roof. This will enable us to enhance cooperation and to focus on helping the country's plantation sector to address various issues and` challenges faced. Our focus is not limited to oil palm and rubber plantations but covers also other crops such as cocoa, pepper and coconut. Many UPM graduates are leaders of the plantation sector or directly involved in the plantation industry of the country. Through IKP, we hope to increase the contribution of UPM through research and professional services. We will work together with government and private agencies related to the plantation sector to ensure we remain relevant and meet the needs of industry.
The main activity of the institute is to provide postgraduate training to help ensure the country's plantation industry to be more competitive in this challenging era. We will also organize seminars and workshops to highlight new ideas and technologies that can be used by the plantation sector. The emphasis on multidisciplinary research encompassing various fields such as agronomy, agricultural engineering, biotechnology, precision agriculture, plant protection, economic and policies will be embraced. This more holistic approach will give results more meaningful and acceptable to the plantation industry.
IKP emphasizes on fundamental research that will enhance the understanding of a product or technology developed for the benefit of industry. We are ready to contribute our knowledge and expertise to be utilised by the industry as well as smallholders. It is my hope that the ties between the IKP with government and private agencies, universities and research institutions as well as NGOs locally and abroad can be improved in ensuring sustainability of the plantation industry.
Here I express my appreciation to all the staff of IKP and the researchers who helped develop the website of IKP. I hope that this effort will continue in the future to update on the progress and activities of the IKP.
