SERDANG, May 13, 2026 – A group of 25 Bachelor of Process and Food Engineering students recently conducted an educational visit to the Institute of Plantation Studies (IKP). This strategic visit was aimed at providing critical exposure to the application of biological principles within the field of engineering, while strengthening their understanding of the Research and Development (R&D) ecosystem led by IKP. Throughout the visit, students were given in-depth briefings on the importance of integrating upstream, middlestream, and downstream research in modern plantation management. A key focus included crop disease management strategies and the utilization of remote sensing technology for real-time monitoring of plantation health to prevent disease outbreaks that could jeopardize productivity. |

Furthermore, emphasis was placed on agricultural waste management, where students were introduced to the concept of the circular economy. Through innovative process technologies, biomass waste can now be converted into high-value downstream products, effectively reducing environmental impact while creating additional revenue streams for the plantation sector. A primary objective of this visit was to foster interest among the younger generation in the plantation sector, which is currently dominated by an aging workforce. By providing exposure to the latest agricultural engineering technologies, the issue of manual labor shortages can be addressed through automation and smart mechanization. Such initiatives are seen as vital in attracting engineering graduates to contribute their expertise toward modernizing the industry. |
