
SERDANG, 23 April – An official visit and interaction session by a delegation from the Sarawak Rubber Industry Board (SARIB) to Institute of Plantations Studies (IKP) was held at Meeting Room, Laboratory of Plantation System Technology and Mechanization (PSTM), IKP, UPM. This session was attended by YBhg. Prof. Ts. Dr. Siti Khairunniza Bejo (Director, IKP), YBhg. Prof. Dr. Wong Mui Yun (Deputy Director, IKP), and also researcher under the IKP UDRP program, UDRP Plantation Crops and UDRP Smart Farming. Among the SARIB representatives who participated in this discussion were Mr. Make Jiwan (General Manager, SARIB) and Mr. Hardy Anak Semui (Administrative Officer, SARIB).
The role of SARIB or Sarawak Rubbber Industry Board is to regulate and revive the rubber industry, especially the smallholder sector. In addition, SARIB also plays a role in promoting, facilitating and developing the rubber industry in Sarawak; formulate strategic objectives for the development and administration of a more orderly rubber industry in Sarawak.
Few agenda were discussed during this session mainly focusing on the potential of changes in rubber plantation management techniques in Sarawak, the importance of sustainability in the rubber industry, and the importance of rubber in various industries around the world. At this session, the two parties also discussed the potential for research collaboration as well as the planning of joint grant applications to develop the Sarawak rubber industry.
