Kenaf Industry Set to Thrive for Over Five Years with Strategic Planning

The kenaf industry in Malaysia is gaining momentum with a comprehensive strategic plan to secure its sustainability and compete alongside major commodities such as palm oil, rubber, and cocoa. Plantation and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani recently announced several initiatives that aim to fortify the industry’s foundation and drive its growth.

In collaboration with the National Kenaf and Tobacco Board (LKTN), the ministry is working on a roadmap to elevate the kenaf sector. Johari emphasized the need for a robust five-year strategic plan with clearly defined targets to ensure resilience and long-term growth. This roadmap will serve as a guideline for LKTN to continue leading the kenaf industry and capitalize on its versatility and economic potential.

One of the key highlights of Johari’s strategy is the goal to increase the proportion of value-added kenaf products to 60%. These products will be promoted as Malaysian-made goods, ensuring their recognition on both domestic and international platforms. This move aims to unlock greater economic benefits for the industry and strengthen its position in the marketplace.

Johari announced plans to send LKTN board members to countries such as Bangladesh and China, both exporters of kenaf, to study their production processes and methodologies. By learning from global leaders, Malaysia hopes to adopt best practices and refine its approach to producing high-quality kenaf products.

To further enhance productivity, the ministry plans to introduce new kenaf varieties, specifically Malaysia Kenaf 1 (MK1) and MK2. These varieties are expected to yield up to 20 metric tons per hectare, marking a significant milestone in the industry's development.

Kenaf is a versatile crop with the potential to produce a wide range of goods. However, Johari highlighted the importance of acquiring the necessary expertise to unlock its full potential. The industry’s strategic plan, coupled with initiatives to learn from global markets and introduce innovative varieties, positions kenaf as a promising sector within Malaysia’s agricultural and industrial landscape.

The roadmap lays the foundation for the kenaf industry to thrive and emerge as a key player in Malaysia’s economy. With collaboration, innovation, and resilience, the future of kenaf looks bright.
