The Deadliest Oil Palm Fungus may soon be Defeated?

Prof. Datin Dr. Siti Nor Akmar Abdullah and her research team at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) have introduced a groundbreaking innovation that could transform Malaysia's oil palm industry.

The UPM Ganoderma Test Kit has been developed to detect Ganoderma boninense infection at its earliest stage-well before any visible symptoms appear on the oil palm. By enabling early diagnosis, the technology allows timely intervention, helping to minimize losses while improving plantation productivity.

From the laboratory to the plantation, this innovation marks a significant milestone in safeguarding the nation’s oil palm industry against Basal Stem Rot (BSR), one of the most destructive diseases threatening oil palm cultivation for decades.

This breakthrough highlights the power of homegrown research in delivering practical, science-driven solutions for a more sustainable and resilient agricultural future.
