IKP Research Seminar by Dr Halimatun Saadiah Hafid

August 30- Institute of Plantation Studies (IKP) had organized Research Seminar Series 8/2022 entitled “Role of Pre-treatment Towards Bioconversion of Lignocellulosic Biomass into Value-added Products”, presented by Dr Halimatun Saadiah Hafid, a Research Officer from the Laboratory of Process and Product Development, IKP. This seminar highlighted the importance of the pre-treatment process in the bioconversion of agricultural biomass into value added products.

The pre-treatment process which can be classified as physical, chemical, biological, biochemical, and thermochemical is a key bottleneck in agricultural biomass processing which aims to primarily break down the structure of lignocellulosic biomass to produce bioenergy-based or bioproduct-based materials. Dr. Halimatun also emphasized the importance of appropriate pre-treatment as this process not only impacts on the yield and quality of the products but also involves high capital and operational cost that would affect the economic value of the whole bioconversion process. More than 40 participants from UPM and other agencies benefited from this seminar.
