IKP Research Seminar by Prof. Datin Dr. Siti Nor Akmar Abdullah

June 23- Institute of Plantation Studies (IKP) organized Research Seminar Series 6/2022 entitled “Competitive Edge for Plantation Crops through CRISPR Technology” which was delivered by Prof. Datin Dr. Siti Nor Akmar Abdullah. This online seminar was moderated by Dr. Kong Lih Ling and participated by 118 participants from various universities, government, and private agencies.

This seminar introduced the Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat (CRISPR) as a precise and cost-effective method to adapt plants to encounter future challenges. CRISPR enables editing and enhancing activity of selected target gene(s) based on understanding of its action and interaction with other genes. Scientists can use the CRISPR/dCas9 system to study the function of these genes and determining interaction between genes in endogenous or natural host. The CRISPR/dCas9 tools (e.g: CRISPRa and base editing) enable researchers to harness the richness of natural variation to build better crops which is not possible through traditional breeding.
