BALI, 2 July 2026 – The Institute of Plantation Studies (IKP), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), has further strengthened its international presence with the invitation of two of its leading researchers, the Director and Deputy Director of IKP, as speakers at the IRRDB Socio Economic Seminar 2026, held at the Aryaduta Bali Hotel, Kuta, Indonesia, from 30 June to 2 July 2026. Jointly organised by the International Rubber Research and Development Board (IRRDB) and Pusat Penelitian Karet (Indonesian Rubber Research Institute), the seminar brought together researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and stakeholders from across the global rubber sector to discuss key issues related to socio-economic development, sustainability, supply chain resilience, and innovations shaping the future of the natural rubber industry.
Representing IKP, Prof. Ts. Dr. Siti Khairunniza Bejo, Director of IKP, delivered a presentation entitled “Detection of Pestalotiopsis Leaf Fall Disease in Hevea brasiliensis using Hyperspectral Imaging and Machine Learning.” Her presentation highlighted the potential of integrating hyperspectral imaging and machine learning technologies as a high-precision approach for the early detection of Pestalotiopsis leaf fall disease in rubber trees. This innovative research demonstrates how advanced digital technologies can enhance crop health monitoring, enable timely disease management interventions, and support the adoption of smart agriculture practices within the rubber plantation industry. Also representing IKP was Prof. Dr. Wong Mui Yun, Deputy Director of IKP, who presented “Building Resilient Rubber Supply Chain Through Biotechnology and Sustainable Disease Management.” Her presentation underscored the importance of biotechnology and sustainable disease management strategies in strengthening the resilience of the rubber supply chain, particularly in addressing challenges arising from climate change, disease outbreaks, and global market uncertainties.
The participation of both researchers reflects IKP and UPM’s commitment to advancing high-impact research and contributing to global discussions on plantation science, agricultural technology, and sustainability.
